A commercial sign is a long-term investment that can serve your business for 10–15 years — if it's properly maintained. Chicago's climate, with its harsh winters, temperature extremes, and severe storms, is particularly demanding on outdoor signage. This guide covers what to do — and what to watch for.
Annual Sign Inspection Checklist
Every spring, after winter is over, inspect your signs for:
- Any letters or panels that are cracked, dented, or displaced by winter ice and wind
- Faded or discolored acrylic faces on illuminated signs (UV fading is gradual but cumulative)
- LED sections that are dim, flickering, or out — note the specific location
- Any loose mounting hardware, brackets, or raceways
- Signs that are no longer level or plumb — can indicate foundation movement for pylon signs
- Awning fabric for tears, mildew spots, or damaged seams
Cleaning Your Commercial Sign
Channel letters and lightbox cabinets: Clean with mild soap and water and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners — they can scratch acrylic faces. A bucket and a soft-bristle brush on an extension pole handles most routine cleaning without requiring a lift.
Awning fabric: Brush off loose dirt first, then clean with mild soap solution and a soft bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly. Never use bleach or high-pressure washing on awning fabric — it strips the water-repellent treatment.
Window graphics: Clean with standard glass cleaner and a soft cloth. Avoid razor blades or abrasive pads that can scratch the vinyl surface.
LED Maintenance
Quality LED modules used in commercial signs typically last 50,000+ hours — about 10+ years of nighttime operation. However, individual modules can fail before that, especially in signs exposed to temperature extremes or moisture ingress.
When you notice sections of your sign are dim or out:
- Note which letters or sections are affected
- Check if the transformer/power supply is accessible and check for tripped circuits
- Call your sign company — LED module replacement is typically a straightforward repair
Winter Preparation
Before Chicago winters, check that all sign components are securely mounted and that any accessible wiring connections are sealed against moisture. For retractable awnings, retract them during snow events to prevent fabric damage from snow load.
