Chicago winters are brutal on signage. Freeze-thaw cycles, ice accumulation, wind loading, and road salt spray can shorten the life of your signs significantly without proper maintenance. Here's your seasonal checklist.
Before Winter — October Checklist
October is the ideal time to address sign maintenance before the first hard freeze. Run through this for each sign:
- Channel letters: Inspect acrylic faces for cracks or yellowing. Moisture gets in through cracks and causes LED failures. Replace damaged faces now.
- Awnings: Check fabric for tears and inspect frame joints. Retract retractable awnings before the first forecast of significant snow — snow load collapses frames.
- Electrical connections: Inspect exposed conduit for cracks. Seal gaps with weatherproof caulk to prevent water intrusion.
- Pylon signs: Ensure all access panels are securely latched. Water in pylon cabinets causes LED failures and accelerated corrosion.
- Window graphics: Check edges for lifting — temperature swings cause vinyl to contract. Re-seal lifting edges with clear vinyl adhesive.
Never use metal scrapers on acrylic sign faces. They scratch and cloud the acrylic irreversibly. Use soft brushes or a foam squeegee to remove ice buildup.
During Winter — What to Monitor
- Ice on awnings: Remove buildup promptly — the weight bends frames and tears fabric
- Road salt spray: Rinse the lower portions of ground-level signs after heavy salting events
- Flickering illumination in cold: Cold temperatures cause LED driver failures — don't wait for complete failure, call for service early
Spring Maintenance — March/April
After Chicago's winter abuse, inspect for:
- Corrosion on mounting brackets — re-prime and paint any bare metal
- Caulking gaps around sign mounting points — re-seal cracked areas
- Awning fabric cleaning — professional cleaning in spring extends fabric life by years
- LED brightness comparison — significant dimming from installation photos indicates LEDs need replacement
